Onward

One vow, not a list

A new year invites a list. Read more, sleep earlier, call home, write the book. Onward asks you to choose one: the largest, the one you have been waiting to begin.

Why one

A list spreads you across things your present self can already manage, and so none of them asks much of you. One large thing asks for what you do not have yet.

That is the point of it. The strength to keep going does not come before the commitment. It comes because of it.

How it works

On the first day you write your vow. Onward also asks what will trouble you on the way: the lie you will tell yourself when you want to quit, and what you will do when it comes.

Then, each day, you take one step by holding a single button for a breath. The path is drawn behind you. At twelve places across a year you arrive somewhere and receive a small gift with a short story.

The days you do not walk

There will be some. Onward does not count them against you, and there is no streak to break. The places arrive by walking days in total, whenever they fall.

When you come back after quiet days, Onward does not cheer you on. It shows you the words you wrote on the first day.
